Copyright Reporting Instructions for Worship Services
These instructions are designed to help congregations and ministry leaders understand when and how to report hymns and music used in worship.
Community of Christ upholds and respects the creative work of others as a form of faithful stewardship.
By following these steps, we ensure that composers, authors, and publishers are honoured for their contributions and that our worship practices remain both ethical and legally compliant.
Before Worship
1. Check song coverage
When planning, verify if each hymn is covered by CCLI or OneLicense (OL).
If a song is not covered by either, it cannot be used and must be replaced.
For best coverage of Community of Christ Sings and other commonly used hymns, it is recommended that congregations maintain both CCLI and OneLicense accounts.
2. Projecting or printing lyrics/music
If lyrics or music are displayed on a screen or printed, include your congregation’s license numbers at the bottom.
Example format:
Words and Music: Carey Landry, 1944
Words and Music © 1985 Carey Landry (published by OCP) License number: CCLI: 65855 | OL: 624442
This format should appear on the final slide or page for each song.
3. Public Domain songs
Songs marked Public Domain or without a copyright symbol (©) do not require a license or reporting.
After Worship
1. Keep a list of songs used
Record all songs used during worship.
Use the provided reporting template to note the title, author/composer, and whether it is covered by CCLI or OL
Record all songs used during worship. Use the provided reporting template to note the title, author/composer, and whether it is covered by CCLI or OL.
2. Submit your report
Report songs to the appropriate platform (CCLI or OneLicense) based on coverage.
If unsure, check the hymn’s copyright line via the CCS Applicable Copyright Licenses Spreadsheet.
Copyright Reporting Timeframes
OneLicense uses an ongoing self-reporting system, which means there is no set reporting period. Congregations are encouraged to report songs as soon as possible after use so that composers and publishers are fairly supported for their creative work.
CCLI, on the other hand, assigns each congregation a reporting window of around six months. During that time, all music used under CCLI coverage must be recorded and submitted.
3. Need assistance?
Please contact Emma Ghazarian, who can help check your licenses or submit reports on your behalf.
Special Notes
Hymnal use: Singing directly from Community of Christ Sings or another printed hymnal does not require a license.
Online or in-home worship: A license is required if lyrics or music are displayed or projected.
Streaming or recording worship: Requires a separate streaming license. Contact the Mission Centre for help confirming your coverage.
