I must say I haven’t needed to use an axe very often in my life.  With all the modern conveniences available to me, such as gas barbeques to cook and radiators and air conditioning for heat, I have had no reason to use an axe to chop wood to make a fire to either cook or keep warm.

However, it has been very different….

We have just celebrated another Mothers’ Day. Each year I remember my own mother. Winifred was a wonderful inspiration to me, academically, socially and theologically. She died of cancer two decades ago at the age I am rapidly approaching.

Each year as Holy Week approaches, I feel a sense of foreboding come over me. The events in the gospels are familiar, following a similar rhythm and narrative each year. As Jesus heads into the city, I sense the danger, and the anticipation of the dark events of Good Friday. Each year, although familiar, something specific will stand out in the story, something that comes forward with new emphasis…

I don’t often read the business pages of our local daily newspaper, the Adelaide Advertiser, but a heading last weekend caught my eye, “Five ways to be rich without a huge bank balance.”

In just a few weeks we will be celebrating the great Christian event of Easter when our Lord, Jesus Christ was raised from the dead.  As you read this editorial think of what your expectations are for observing this great occasion.
