Ordination Reflection by Peter Lonsdale

What a joy it was to gather with folks in Perth and those joining online to share in this sacred moment. I began the day early. In anticipation, I woke at around 4.30am with lots of thoughts running through my mind. I remembered my parents whose nurturing and love guided me throughout my life. I remembered the deep connection I have with my sisters and the ways they have blessed my life. I remembered my church community across Australia who helped raise me and provided so many experiences of sacred community over the years, fostering precious friendships that have lasted a lifetime. I reflected on the love of my wife Jill, our children and grandchildren. I have indeed been sustained by the love and support of so many!

My thoughts then turned to those sharing with me in the service: our Presiding Evangelist Mareva, Apostle Lachlan, Mission Centre President Meredith and husband Dennis, my Perth congregation and ministry colleagues, the musicians, Food Pantry volunteers and patrons, and WA Show Choir members. Each person and group is a sacred community to me, a community where the spirit of Christ is made real!

During the worship service itself, there were moments when I was overcome with emotion, barely containing the tears. I felt the touch of God’s spirit as we sang sacred songs, heard sacred scripture, testimony and message. As Mareva offered the prayer of ordination, I felt the warm touch of God’s presence wash over me in this sacramental ordinance of our faith community. I was blessed indeed!

In many ways, my whole life has prepared me for this call and this time. I’ve been reminded again of how connected we all are, across time and space, generations past and present. Every experience and person has helped shape and mould me, and God’s spirit and blessing has been with me throughout. I believe this ordination has quickened my spirit and will empower me for further ministry as I seek to serve all God’s children, wherever I meet them.

In love and thanks,

Peter Lonsdale
