Grace Along the Way by Meredith Carr

This past week took me into two communities whose faith and welcome left a deep impression on me. Our first stop was the Sunshine Coast, where we gathered for the baptism of Daniel Brand. It was a gentle and joyful service, filled with warmth and a genuine sense of support. As Daniel entered this new life in Christ, the community around him offered encouragement, support, and a place to belong. It was a beautiful reminder that God works through the sacraments to shape us, bless us, and call us into community.

From there we travelled to Victoria for an Advent service and to witness the ordination of Dianne Kent to the office of Elder. Advent invites us to notice the light that enters our lives in surprising ways, and Dianne’s ordination was one of those moments. The community gathered with a deep sense of joy as hands were placed upon her and prayers were spoken. It was a powerful affirmation of the ministry she offers with faithfulness and love.

In Community of Christ, sacraments help us pay attention to the sacred presence that moves through our everyday lives. They are signs of God’s grace at work among us, but they are also invitations. Baptism invites us into a new way of living that is shaped by compassion, generosity, and community. Ordination blesses the gifts within a person and calls the whole community to support and encourage their ministry. Each sacrament reminds us that faith is something we live together. These moments open our eyes to God’s movement in our common life, in our relationships, and in the trust we place in one another as we journey forward.

It has been a full and meaningful trip from start to finish, but it is good to be home, to gather up the many conversations and sacred moments I have shared along the way, and to hold them with gratitude as we continue our life together as a Mission Centre.

As we move through this Advent Season, may we take time to notice the quiet ways God is moving among us and consider how we might become a source of encouragement and belonging for someone who needs it.
