The July 2025 issue of Peninsula Essence magazine features the story “So Few Souls to Save “ which explores the early beginnings of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hastings, Victoria. Arriving in 1885, the group quickly began distinguishing their identity from the Mormon church. As they saw steady growth, a church building was constructed in 1888. Members faithfully nurtured a growing community through the end of the 19th century, even in the midst of religious turmoil; Hastings harboured far too many religious denominations competing for the following of far too few townspeople. This local history highlights the early roots of Community of Christ in the Hastings area and the commitment of those who built a faithful community with only a few souls to save.
