This past weekend, I found myself in the midst of something profoundly sacred. In Sydney, a retreat brought together people whose paths do not often cross in-person. Despite the distance and demands, they made their way. They travelled across miles and responsibilities, answering the quiet pull of belonging, choosing connection over convenience. With intention and care, they carved out time, rearranged calendars, and came to be with one another. In their coming together, I glimpsed the kind of community to which we are called: a place of belonging, support, and Spirit-led growth.
The group shared walks in nature, were stirred by art and theatre, lingered at tables in laughter and conversation, and paused in worship. Beneath it all was a gentle reminder of the Spirit’s call to community. The time together became an affirmation of our connection, a shared belonging that nourished something deep within us. It was a reminder that when we gather in love, we embody God’s goodness and discover belonging that nourishes the soul.
Not long after, I joined A Pleasant Sunday Afternoon with the Wingham congregation. Once more, community revealed itself in a different form. The chapel was filled with music, voices were lifted in celebration, instruments were played with care. There was joy as each person offered their unique gifts to the whole, weaving together a chorus of spirit and song. It wasn’t just a performance. It was worship. It was community. It was love made visible in sound and presence, holding us all in tender care.
Though the settings were different, both gatherings pointed to the same truth: when we make space to be present with one another, to share our gifts freely, and to open ourselves to the Spirit’s movement, we live into our shared mission. We become communities where joy can take root, where hope is renewed, where love is practiced, and where peace begins to grow.
May we continue to be that kind of community, wherever and however we gather.
