Earlier this week, Australia Mission Centre staff gathered in Sydney, and as always, it was a joy to be together in person. While we connect regularly online, there is something special about sharing meals, conversations, laughter, and the occasional side story that simply doesn't fit into a virtual meeting.
Meredith Carr created space for us to reflect on both the joys and challenges we've experienced since our last gathering. As each person shared, I was reminded of the incredible depth of care, compassion, and commitment that exists within our staff team. The support we offer one another is not just about looking after colleagues; it equips us to better support congregations, ministries, and individuals across Australia. Ultimately, the people of the Australia Mission are at the heart of everything we do.
Not all of our discussions were the exciting kind. We spent time talking about employee handbooks, health and safety, compliance and legal requirements, finances, policies, and all the administrative details that keep an organisation functioning well. It may not be the sort of work that makes headlines, but it is essential. Strong systems and good governance create the foundation that allows ministry to flourish. While paperwork, policies, and compliance requirements are rarely anyone's favourite topic, they play an important role in helping us meet our legal obligations, care for one another responsibly, and steward the resources entrusted to us. Thankfully, there was plenty of laughter to carry us through those conversations, along with a strategic supply of gummy snakes provided by Karen, our wonderful Human Resources Officer. Sometimes ministry looks like deep theological discussion; sometimes it looks like sharing lollies while discussing compliance documents.
One of my biggest takeaways from our time together was gratitude for the strong foundation that supports our Mission Centre. Meredith Carr and Julie Crittenden work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure staff are supported, equipped, and valued. Alongside them are administrative staff whose work in finance, communication, compliance, operations, and countless other areas often happens quietly but is vital to the life of our community. While we sometimes talk about "administrative" and "ministerial" roles as though they are separate things, the truth is that they overlap constantly. Whether someone is preparing a budget, updating a policy, planning an event, communicating with members, or providing pastoral support, we are all working toward the same goal: supporting people and participating in Christ's mission.
We also spent time discussing the upcoming Australia National Gathering, and the excitement is definitely building. Conversations centred around the theme, Who Do We Say We Are?, and the opportunities we will have to explore that question together as a community. A few of us were able to visit Wiseman's Retreat, and from the moment we stepped out of our vehicles we were greeted by birdsong, fresh air, and a tangible sense of peace. The grounds are beautiful, the meeting spaces are welcoming, and the accommodation is comfortable and inviting. More than anything, though, we found ourselves imagining the people who will fill those spaces in August and the connections, conversations, worship, and shared experiences that will take place there.
We missed those staff members who were unable to join us in person this week, but we carry their contributions with us as planning continues. My hope is that the spirit of encouragement, collaboration, and genuine care that shaped our staff gathering will continue to ripple outward to National Gathering, into our congregations, and throughout our sacred community. Every decision we make is made with our members and our shared mission in mind. It is a privilege to serve alongside people who never lose sight of that purpose.
