As we look ahead to IYF/SPEC 2027, we’re sharing stories from past participants about the lasting impact of international youth experiences. Their reflections remind us why these opportunities matter and why fundraising is so important in helping make them accessible for the next generation of Australian youth.
What is a lasting memory from your time at IYF and/or SPEC?
I attended IYF and SPEC in 2018 when I was 17, and one of my memories during my trip was being selected to represent the Australian delegation and speak on the stage on a panel in front of every IYF participant. Don’t ask me what we were talking about though because my memory isn’t that good! I am not an outgoing person who puts their hand up to talk in front of large audiences, but during my time overseas, I was able to find the confidence I needed to step out of my comfort zone and experience something I’d usually say no to.
Why would you recommend someone else attend/ or the wider church support these sort of youth based events?
I found that being amongst others my own age, who may have been going through similar life experiences as myself really allowed me to connect to the community and the church through friendship, music and conversation. By building up that community, I felt my faith building as well. I would recommend youth-based events, especially IYF and SPEC to any youth who is feeling a lack of community or wanting to extend their faith around other youths who can understand and connect to them.
