Grateful Encounters, Ongoing Journey by Lachlan Mackay

As my first trip to Australia in an apostolic role comes to a close, a seven-hour flight delay has given me time to reflect on my visit. My aim was to begin building relationships with current and future leaders, as well as members and friends of the church. I set out to learn about your history and accomplishments, your hopes and dreams, frustrations, complexities, abilities, and insights. I feel I have made a solid start, and I look forward to making even greater progress when I return in November.

My sincere thanks to Robert Thompson, who guided me from Brisbane to Newcastle, and to Annie Falke, who did the same from the Mornington Peninsula to Sydney. I am also grateful to everyone who hosted me along the way and to those who welcomed us for tea. In addition to many ministry visits, I had the opportunity to worship with AWOL/Brisbane, the young adult retreat gathering, Frankston, and the Tuesday Church Table Communion group. I enjoyed a delightful tea at the Tuncurry church with members from across the mid-north coast and explored the beautiful new Tiona Chapel. My back is still a bit sore from the meaningful service projects we took part in at the Young Adult Retreat, thanks to the capable coordination of Kristie Woodward, working together with Ben Smith and his network of organisations.

In the past, I came to believe that the church in Australia “punches above its weight.” I apologize for the less-than-peaceful metaphor, but my initial impression from this visit only reinforces that belief. I look forward to supporting you in the years ahead as we strive to become even more effective as the hands and feet of Jesus in our communities.
