Singing What We Believe: A LEAD Retreat Reflection by Geoff Ivers

Visiting Bendigo was a rich and renewing experience as I joined the Community of Christ Leadership Training and Spiritual Formation Program (LEAD) Cohort. Meeting alongside facilitators and the participants who are actively developing their leadership skills and deepening their understanding of church ministry, created an atmosphere of curiosity, openness, and shared purpose.

I had the privilege of contributing in sessions on the history of hymnals within Community of Christ, exploring how hymnology reflects and shapes our theological journey. The question asked was “Do we sing what we believe?” Together, we traced themes of peace and justice, Zion and inclusion through the hymnals. It was very meaningful to see how these resonated with those present.

One of the most joyful sessions was the singing of favourite hymns and each one sharing their story of why they were favourites and how it spoke to them of faith and belief.

There was something powerful in hearing familiar words carried in new ways, and in discovering how older hymns are being reimagined through updated language and fresh musical arrangements—reminding us that our tradition is alive and still unfolding.

Beyond the sessions, the rhythm of the weekend mattered just as much. Times of spiritual practice grounded us, inviting reflection and connection with God. Conversations over meals and in between sessions built genuine fellowship, strengthening relationships across our gathered community.

The weekend culminated in Communion, a fitting and sacred blessing and sending. It gathered all we had shared—learning, music, prayer, and community—into a moment of grace and commissioning. I left Bendigo encouraged and hopeful, carrying a renewed sense of how leadership, worship, and story continue to shape the life of our church.
